Fans of the YouTube video-sharing website or any other website banned by the Thai goverment will soon face severe punishment under a new cyber-crime law. The bill regards as a crime the intention to withhold (IP) addresses and violators are subject to severe
punishment. Anyone using a proxy server to visit a website censored by the Thai government could now end up in jail.
The bill sailed through its third reading on Wednesday by a vote of 119 to 1. The act (which has been passed by legislators and is currently awaiting royal approval) also creates a new class of cyber-crime defined as "any act that damages Thailand either directly or indirectly, including those carried out abroad." and deemed to "damage the country both directly and indirectly".
The government pushed the new law by saying it hopes the bill will provide an effective legal tool to fight cyber crime, including theft of data and chat room contacts that lead to rape.
In a bid to streamline tourism to the region, Cambodia and Thailand have signed a deal that will allow tourists to visit both countries with a single Visa. Once implemented, visitors will be able to apply at both Cambodian and Thai embassies for the new Visa. Tourists just apply for a single visa at one place, and they can travel to both Cambodia and Thailand," said Cambodia’s foreign minister Hor Namhong for The Economic Times. According to Namhong, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam could also eventually sign up to the deal. The Visa was developed through the Ayeyawady-Chao Phya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS), a joint development scheme that includes the five nations.
